Comment or story: I was diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease at the age of fifteen. Before that, I could never go to the bathroom, and had to go into the hospital to get clean outs. So then one morning I woke up and had a fever, nausea, and couldn't control my bowel movements at all. So I ended up going into the hospital and after two full thickness rectal biopsies, was diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease. I had to get a loop colostomy, and so far I have had it for 3 months. I am due to get reversal surgery in about 3 more months. I usually have lots of pain in my stoma during the morning, and also sometimes during the day time. Is this normal? Also, what should I expect for the reversal surgery?

Comment or story:      Hello ! I have a j pouch for 4 years. My mom had hers 16 years. She was my biggest information on how to handle the different problems. She unfortunately passed away a year after I had my surgery. I would like to talk with anyone that could share how they handle different problems from foods that hate me to the relief of gas. Thank you !

Comment or story:     I have had a continent ileostomy since 1976.  It was done at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York by the late Irwin Gelernt, M.D.  About three years ago the valve started to seriously slip and I was contemplating having a revision done.  However, since I retired from my job (with a very long commute) last year, the situation has improved tremendously.  My theory is that since there was less pressure on the valve (it was almost impossible to go to the bathroom while traveling to work), it has somehow healed itself.
There are very few surgeons who are familiar with this procedure, and those that are will retire soon.
